What’s it Like to Work at LaForce?

Highlighting: Building Products Consultants

Shawn Fabisiak manages a team of five Building Products Consultants in the Milwaukee market. These consultants are crucial to LaForce’s success, since they handle a large portion of company business! Read on to discover what Shawn has to say about what it takes to be successful in this role.

Building Products Consultants manage updates to existing buildings, such as replacement doors and locks. Shawn’s team must be adept at gathering information and solving problems, since no two construction jobs are ever alike. These employees must be:

  • Organized and self-motivated to plan and execute their own schedules;
  • Flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and customer demands;
  • Great problem-solvers; and
  • Exceptional communicators.

Shawn says that communication, in particular, is crucial with both internal colleagues and external clients, since every project that LaForce fulfills is a team effort. The Building Products Consultant may be the face of the company to the customer, but many aspects take place behind-the-scenes. In addition, employees need to be flexible when it comes to supporting customers through various communication methods – phone, text, email, and in-person.

Shawn notes that LaForce consultants spend half their time in the office and half their time visiting customers on-site. Typical customers range from school or hospital facility directors to small business owners or maintenance personnel.

One challenge of the job is handling emergency calls and last-minute issues. For example, a building user may experience a broken lock and call LaForce for assistance. Often, an Installation Professional can handle the on-site maintenance, but sometimes Shawn’s team fixes such problems themselves. This requires both technical knowledge and the ability to rely on other LaForce experts for assistance and trouble-shooting.

According to Shawn, this team-focused atmosphere is a huge perk for LaForce workers. Once a new problem is encountered and solved, with the help of colleagues, the individual now has more “tools” in his or her “toolbox” to be a more successful Building Products Consultant.

LaForce is a hard-working, friendly company that emphasizes culture, advancement, leadership, and growth. These four areas are the top reasons why people continue to work for LaForce.

Culture

“We really care about our employees.”

LaForce accentuates work-life balance, as well as community involvement and a healthy lifestyle. LaForce has an active Volunteer Program and Wellness Program, made up of employees from multiple work areas. Many initiatives are implemented throughout the year to help employees make healthy choices and give back to their communities. Beyond these resources, LaForce maintains a positive and supportive working climate for its day-to-day business.

Advancement

“Your career here at LaForce is in your hands.”

President/CEO Brian Mannering began working at LaForce 29 years ago in shipping and receiving, and Chairman/former CEO Ken Metzler started 37 years ago in the estimating division. These are just two examples of the “advancement from within” precedent at LaForce. Most managers and leaders work their way up in the organization, and many other employees switch teams and duties during their tenure at the company.

Leadership

“Our leaders are forward-thinking and engaged.”

With an open door policy and a management team that makes an effort to get to know all employees, LaForce is a growing company with a small business feel. LaForce leaders are innovative and hard-working, and aren’t afraid to get involved with the day-to-day operations of the company.

Growth

“If you’re looking for a stable and growing company to call home, this is it.”

Since 2000, LaForce has added seven new locations nationwide. This spurs growth and hiring not only at the new locations, but also in the support teams at the Green Bay headquarters. Growth at LaForce is also deliberate and responsible. New markets are carefully vetted and conservatively projected prior to investment.

These are just four of the reasons why LaForce’s workforce is so committed. For more information about current open positions, visit our Careers homepage.
