When designed properly, entrance flooring and mats in facilities are great at eliminating tracked in dirt. There should be approximately 20′ of matting to trap outside dirt before being tracked into your building.
Ideally, this surface will be broken down into at least two areas. The first should be a grate or mat designed to allow snow and dirt to be scraped off. The second area should trap any excess dirt from the first area, as well as provide an area for patrons to finish cleaning and drying their shoes. This could be a permanent matting area that is in place year round or simply a runner that the maintenance staff lays down during inclement weather.
Proper care at the entrance goes a long way toward reducing maintenance/cleaning costs and maintaining the appearance of your facility’s entry.
